Giovanni Buttarelli took office as Assistant Supervisor in January 2009.
Prior to his appointment as Assistant Supervisor, Mr. Buttarelli worked as Secretary General of the Italian DPA from 1997. Between 2002-2003 he was President of the Schengen Joint Supervisory Body, after being its Vice-President. His long and broad experience at international level in the fields of data protection and related issues was enriched by the participation in many committees and working groups operating in the European Union, at the Council of Europe and within other organizations, as well as by the international cooperation between data protection authorities.
